Abstract

Background and Objective: The pharmacist’s role in healthcare is changing from dispensing drugs to focusing on the whole person. This movement towards more comprehensive care is a result of an increased focus on chronic disease and polypharmacy worldwide. This study aimed to assess the role of pharmacists in the modern healthcare system. The article describes the general trends in pharmacist’s work, explores the pharmacist’s role in several key areas: primary care, management of chronic disease, pharmacogenomics, and new digital tools in pharmacy.[2]

Methods: The descriptive study gathered information from the latest published reports, reviews, and guidelines. The focus was on the clinical, economic, and humanistic role of pharmacists, particularly medication therapy management, implementation of the CPIC guidelines for pharmacogenomics, and new approaches such as telepharmacy, pharmacist’s role in disasters and pandemics.[7]

Discussion: The study confirmed the critical role pharmacists play in enhancing the quality of care and optimizing clinical and economic outcomes. Pharmacists are involved in developing and implementing new approaches to medication management, including chronic disease treatment programs and medication therapy management, resulting in reduced hospital readmissions and improved treatment outcomes such as systolic blood pressure or HbA1c. Pharmacists also address the challenges of pharmacogenomics, including the identification of patients at risk of phenoconversion and adverse drug reactions due to genetic polymorphism. The use of new digital tools such as telepharmacy and artificial intelligence in pharmacy practice can improve access to care, particularly in areas. Nevertheless, the lack of provider status and appropriate reimbursement, despite growing evidence of their value to patients, remains a challenge.[5]

Conclusion: Pharmacists are essential healthcare providers, playing a critical role in transforming the traditional pharmacy practice. Enhancing the role of pharmacists and their involvement in new healthcare technologies such as artificial intelligence or disaster management will optimize care outcomes and ensure better health for populations worldwide. Pharmacy education should be adjusted to prepare pharmacists to play a more active role in public health, including disaster management, and update their knowledge of pharmacogenomics.[6]
