Green Pharmacy: The Emerging Role of Pharmacists in Sustainable Healthcare
Keywords:
Green PharmacyAbstract
Green pharmacy is an integrative approach that addresses the negative environmental impact of the pharmaceutical sector at different stages, including production, use, and disposal. The main threats to the environment include pharmaceutical waste, active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs), and the industry’s overall environmental footprint. Pharmacists play a significant role by making a positive change in the healthcare system by ensuring appropriate use of drugs, advocating for the adoption of sustainable practices, and educating patients. Different settings contribute to the development of green pharmacy by engaging in various activities, such as pharmaceutical companies’ implementation of green chemistry, community pharmacists’ participation in patients’ counseling and medication return programs, and hospital pharmacists’ management of drug inventory and waste management. Besides, the application of antimicrobial stewardship programs and the utilization of e-technologies are useful in reducing the ecological print of the pharmaceutical industry.
A number of challenges should be taken into account when developing strategies in support of sustainability, including the lack of environmental knowledge and training among pharmacists, absence of collection programs at pharmacies, and the economic burden related to the incorporation of sustainable methods into practice. The role of pharmacists in promoting green pharmacy initiatives should be emphasized in order to ensure the delivery of high-quality, environmentally friendly care, as well as comply with international standards. The strategy for pharmacy educators, administrators, and pharmacists in India is the development of sustainable healthcare systems at all levels. In this sense, pharmacists can make a difference in the global healthcare system by supporting the ecological sustainability of the pharmaceutical sector.
